To Serve and Protect and Change Lives

ImageAs police officers, Karl Wright and Sean Custodio are trained to preserve life and protect the community. Together they have brought preserving life to a new level by preserving health as well. In February 2013, Grunt Performance was born after 2 ½ years of planning and preparation. Need to make a little noise when you lift? Use a little chalk? Drop a bit of weight (safely of course!)? No problem! No lunk alarm here folks! Grunt Performance, located in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada is a 6500 sq. ft. facility that offers a variety of classes, catering to everyone from the professional fighters like Jesse Richardson to the weekend warriors to the lovely ladies of Lululemon.

I was able to take Karl’s G-Fit class. In honor of my arrival, Karl planned an “Ohio” Hurricane. A hurricane is a form of metabolic training used in the Training For Warriors system. It’s named a Hurricane because like the storm it is short, powerful and requires a period of rebuilding after the disruption that it’s caused. There are 5 categories with category 1 being the easiest and category 5 being the most demanding on the body.  While I was there I met a girl named Kimberly Ragbir who was training for her physical fitness test to become a police officer. She said that if the guys at Grunt can’t get someone into shape no one can! Everyone there is more than willing to go above and beyond to help someone reach their goals. The members are awesome and the workouts kick ass. Anyone who is unfamiliar with lifting and equipment can feel overwhelmed, but the staff is great about making you feel comfortable and giving you the tools to create a better you.

Tanya Power-Whalen took the tools that she was given and has been using them well! In just 7 short months Tanya is now 60 lbs lighter and over 50 inches smaller. Grunt Performance has changed her life! She’s energetic, strong, happy and now welcomes new challenges with excitement! As a wife, mother and EMS dispatcher, this new found energy is crucial. Tanya’s gym time is so important to her that she’s also found time in her schedule to be the executive assistant for Grunt Performance.

I think the biggest take away that I had from this visit was the importance of time management. If something is important enough to you, you will find a way to make it a part of your life. Karl is a husband, police officer, and expecting father. Sean is also a husband, father and police officer. Together with the help of facility coordinator and Danish badass Peter Assentoft, Karl and Sean work together to make sure they can balance family, work and growing their business. If you don’t think that you have enough hours in your day take a lesson from these guys! No excuses! If something matters enough to you, time is never an issue!
